Safety testing of electronic / electrical equipment

TRaC can provide safety testing for electronic / electrical products to meet the growing needs for worldwide compliance:

  • Safety testing and certification of electrical and electronic equipment to international and European safety standards
  • Pre-compliance evaluations that identify problem areas early in the design stage, to reduce the need for potentially expensive modifications

TRaC accreditations for electronic / electrical products include:

  • UKAS. The United Kingdom Accreditation Service is the UK national accreditation body that is recognised by the UK government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, the organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services. TRaC is accredited by UKAS to IEC/ISO 17025.

  • CB. TRaC can provide CB test reports and certificates to IEC 60950-1, IEC 60950-22 & IEC 60065. Read more about CB Certification »

TRaC provide safety testing to the following standards:

Product Category Applicable Standard*
IT, Office and Business Equipment IEC/EN 60950-1
Audio, Video and Similar Equipment IEC/EN 60065
Independent Power Supplies and Power Transformers IEC/EN 61558
Equipment for Measurement Control and Laboratory Use IEC/EN 61010-1
UK Plugs BS 1363-1

Additional safety test services for telecoms & radio products:

Test Service Applicable Standard*
Flammability Testing IEC 60695
Comparative Tracking Index IEC 60112
Resistibility of Telecommunications Equipment to Overvoltages and Overcurrents ITU-T K.20
ITU-T K.21
ITU-T K.44

* In most cases, the standards listed are the relevant international IEC standards. Where applicable, TRaC can perform testing against many of the national equivalents, such as the EN (European Norms) and UL standards.

SAR testing

Meeting with the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) requirements is mandatory for meeting with the R&TTE and FCC requirements. SAR is a dosimetric quantity that is defined as the rate at which RF energy is absorbed in the body per unit mass.

Regulatory SAR Testing

Examples of standards TRaC can test against:

Country Standard
Europe EN 50360:2001 / EN 50361:2001 / EN 50371:2002
EN 50383:2002 / EN 50384:2002 / EN 50385:2002
US 47CFR 2.1091 and 2.1093
FCC OET Bulletin 65, Supplement C

Component safety testing

Due to the modular nature of design, many products incorporate component modules as part of an overall product. TRaC is able to offer Component Safety testing for such modules to reduce costs and increase the marketing potential of the component module itself.

In this way TRaC can help you to meet regulatory and non-regulatory requirements and ensure compliance of your end products that use these individual components.

Components can be certified under the CB scheme, or application for the European Norm Electrical Certification (ENEC) mark. The ENEC conformity mark is based on harmonised European safety standards for specific product ranges. TRaC can offer the ENEC mark for IT Equipment to EN60950-1. This mark indicates that products have been independently certified and includes factory inspection and ongoing surveillance.

Alternatively, you can use a TRaC test report to self declare compliance under the Low Voltage Directive.

Typical Products

Modular system components (eg. power supplies) of IT equipment or audio, video and similar electronic apparatus.

Regulatory Testing

Below are listed the technical standards against which TRaC performs the component safety testing:

Standard Ref  Equipment Coverage
IEC 60950-1 Information technology equipment
IEC 60065 Audio, video and similar electronic apparatus

Flammability Testing

Both components and materials have to be tested for flammability. Some components/materials can be sourced pre-assessed against standards such as UL94. Where this is not the case, TRaC is able and accredited to perform flammability tests.

Typical Products

All components and materials of IT equipment and audio/visual equipment.

Regulatory Testing

TRaC is accredited to perform flammability tests against the following standards:

Standard Ref Equipment Coverage
IEC 60950-1 Information technology equipment
IEC 60950 Information technology equipment
IEC 60065 Audio, video and similar electronic apparatus

In addition to the flammability tests, TRaC is also able to offer full regulatory safety testing.

Lightning strikes and surge testing

TRaC provide NEBS testing (Network Building Systems Equipment) for manufacturers who sell their equipment to the US Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) and includes companies such as Bellsouth, SBC and Verizon or any Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC). In addition, suppliers to other US markets may also be asked if their equipment is NEBS compliant because many distributors use these requirements as part of their procurement specifications.

Because of its application in the telecommunications network, telecommunications equipment may be exposed to one or more sources of electromagnetic energy. Therefore protection is required to prevent damage and malfunction due to lightning, 60Hz commercial power fault conditions, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), operation in the presence of a dc potential difference, and operation in a steady-state induced voltage environment.

Typical Products

Telecommunications and datacommunications equipment.

Conformance Testing

Below are a selection of test standards that TRaC uses to confirm operation during lightning strikes and power surges.

In general these standards apply to products in North America, however they are also used for conformance by network operators around the world:

Standard Ref  Tests performed
Bellcore GR-1089-CORE Lightning strikes and surge tests
UL 60950-1 Power line cross testing
ITU-T K.20, K.21 and K.44 Surge testing
