TRaC offers a full testing and type approval service for a wide range of telecoms equipment to ensure that products intended for sale or use in South Africa meet all of the necessary regulatory and compliance requirements for Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) approvals.

TRaC is an ICASA accredited test lab and its reports are also accepted by SABS. KTL also offers project management of the ICASA and SABS type approval processess, from completion of application forms to ongoing liaison with the approvals bodies to ensure type approval is granted.

TLTE and RF Equipment – ICASA Certification

Types of Equipment

TLTE and RF Type Approval is applicable but not necessarily limited to, data and text processing equipment, data preparation equipment, data terminal equipment, data circuit terminating equipment (for example, modems), automatic telephone answering machines, facsimile transceivers, call restriction devices, cordless telephones, digital and analogue feature telephones, lightning protection devices, line monitoring equipment, and speech recorders.

Type Approval Requirements

ICASA requires that EMC and Safety testing is performed at an accredited test facility and for analogue equipment testing must be performed by organizations such as at TRaC, which is an ICASA accredited test lab.

TLTE equipment intended for sale or use in South Africa is subject to:

  • Terminal attachment requirements (if applicable)

  • RF requirements (if applicable)

  • EMC requirements

  • Product safety requirements

Project Management for ICASA Approvals

For ICASA approvals, the process that TRaC can project manage includes the following services:

  • Completion of all paperwork including application forms, declarations, and letters of authority to be sent to ICASA in South Africa

  • Liaison with local offices and distributors in South Africa

  • Submission of the approval applications to ICASA

  • Making payment for the certification on your behalf

  • Ongoing liaison with ICASA until type approval is granted

Non-Telecommunications Equipment – SABS Certification

A SABS letter of authority (LOA) is required for all manufacturers and importers for non-Telecommunication line terminal equipment intended for sale or use in South Africa.

Type Approval Requirements

The LOA is issued based on the submission of a safety test report, which must be produced, by a labortatory that is accredited by a national accreditation body or a CB scheme member, be in IEC format and must contain all South African national differences where applicable.

SABS accept TRaC test reports for the following standards

TRaC can assist manufactures and importers in gaining a SABS LOA by providing a project management service that includes the following services:

  • Compiling the appropriate submission package which includes the completion of application forms, declarations

  • Letters of authority

  • Liaison with local offices/distributors in South Africa

  • Submission of all documentation to SABS

  • Making payment for the certification on your behalf

  • Liaison with SABS until the LOA is granted
