Services for the Marine Industry
Marine equipment on the whole is covered by International conventions regulated by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). These regulations are designed to ensure that ocean going vessels and equipment that is related to safety of life at sea (SOLAS) are approved to an internationally agreed level of safety.
In Europe equipment which is designated as SOLAS is covered by the Marine Equipment Directive (96/98/EC) which invokes the IMO Regulations. Typically the following test specifications are used to support these requirements which are a combination of insurance backed schemes and legislative requirements.
Whilst it should be noted that military vessels may need to meet dedicated military specifications, compliance with CE marking is also required. This means that for example a ship is designated as a ‘mobile installation’ by the EMC Directive (2004/108/EC) and hence would need to be approved as apparatus under that directive.
