Harmonics and flicker testing

Harmonics and Flicker are requirements of the EMC and R&TTE Directives for Europe. The purpose of these standards is to limit the harmonics injected back into the AC low voltage power distribution system (EN61000-3-2,12) and ensure that the load of equipments does not cause an unacceptable degradation of lights connected to the supply (EN61000-3-3,11).

TRaC holds UKAS accreditation to ISO17025 for the relevant Harmonics and Flicker standards listed below.

Typical Products

All equipment is covered by the scope of the standards if their have an active power supply and covers all equipment with switched mode power supplies including household, professional and industrial equipment. There are exclusions for some products including professional equipment with a rated input power of greater than 1kW.

Regulatory Testing

The following harmonised standards are used by TRaC to test against for Harmonics and Flicker:

Standard Ref Emissions type
EN61000-3-2 Mains harmonic port conducted emissions (50Hz to 2KHz)
EN6000-3-12
Mains harmonic port conducted emissions (50Hz to 2KHz) with input current greater  than 16A per phase and less than 75 amps
EN61000-3-3
Limitation of voltage changes, voltage fluctuations and flicker in public low-voltage supply systems, for equipment with rated current ≤ 16 A per phase and not subject to conditional connection
EN61000-3-11 Limitation of voltage changes, voltage fluctuations and flicker in public low-voltage supply systems, for equipment with rated current greater than 16 A per phase and less than 75 amps and not subject to conditional connection

In addition to the above, TRaC can also perform all the required EMC emissions tests required by regulation for markets around the world.
