Climatic testing

The successful operation of an engineered component, system or product is affected by the surrounding naturally occurring climate or changes to that climate during its service life.

Climatic testing, performed under laboratory conditions, accurately simulates a range of natural and man made conditions that are likely to be encountered by a product.

Climatic testingClimatic testing and the affects of a climatic environment are used to assess a products suitability for service as part of a mandatory contractual requirement or as part of a product development programme.

Climatic tests are performed to either accepted national and international standards or to customer specific requirements.

These standards include;

  • IEC 60068 Series
  • BS EN Series
  • RTCA
  • MIL STD
  • DEF STAN
  • National specifications e.g. ASTM specifications
  • Company specific specifications e.g. VW 801.01

Climatic testing includes such environments that simulate hot, cold and/or humid conditions and corrosive atmospheres such as seen in an aqueous salt or pollutant gas atmosphere or the affects of solar radiation. Climatic testing will also simulate the affects of pressure and/or altitude, or alternatively sand, dust or water ingress, or climatic testing can also replicate the affects of chemical contamination or mould growth.

TRaC's ability to perform climatic testing is demonstrated by its ability to simulate a wide variety of climatic conditions in its UKAS accredited climatic testing laboratory.
