CE marking of military equipment
The current UK EMC regulations (2006:3418) implementing EMC Directive 2004/108/EC do not have a specific exemption for military equipment.
The general view was that all Military equipment was exempt from all CE marking directives. However this is not the case and a guideline note is included in Defence Standard 59-411 Part 1 with reference to compliance to the EMC Directive.
Applying the EMC Directives to defence projects could lead to the duplication of compliance testing, once for Def Stan 59-411 and once for CE Marking and could incur additional costs as well.
Testing can be minimised by establishing within the Technical Documentation the gap analysis between Def Stan 59-411 and commercial standards. However the general perception that Def Stan 59-411 satisfies the majority of the EMC Directive requirements is not always true. Post gap analysis for testing may be required in accordance with commercial standards.
To help ensure that your Military Equipment are correctly CE marked, TRaC has produced a FREE technical notes to the changing standards requirements.
