Acoustic shock testing

Under the LVD directive for CE marking all products incorporating acoustical interfaces require acoustic shock testing. This tests is called up in IEC60950:2005 for Europe.  If the product is intended for connection in North America then UL60950:2007 testing would be appropriate.  The test requirements for UL60950:2007 are more onerous and require additional surge tests (short duration test) to ensure the maximum sound pressure level at the acoustic interface meets the relevant requirements.

To assist manufacturers of equipment intended to connect to the PSTN in meeting the requirements of Acoustic Shock, TRaC is able to offer testing against the following:

Standard Ref Description
BS 6317 clause 13.9 Acoustic Shock requirements covering EU requirements
(The above clause states that a handset or headset must limit acoustic pressure to the ear piece and shall be less than +24dBPa. This method and limit are also found as an advisory Annex D in TBR 10 for DECT handsets)
Standard Ref Description
UL60950:2007 Annex NAD Specific Requirements for Acoustic Shock

The specific limits for the UL60950 standard are:

Long duration measurements Short duration measurement
Headsets less than +24dBPa
Handset less than +31dBPa
Inner ear headset less than +27dBPa
All products less than +42dBPa
